The month of February is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and increasing knowledge about prevention. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The American Heart Association (AHA) states that 1 in 4 Americans will die of heart disease and more than one in three adults have some form of cardiovascular disease.
Do you know how healthy your ticker really is? Awareness and action are key this Heart Health month. February presents the perfect opportunity to reflect on your own heart health through diet, exercise, healthy living and health monitoring with your physician.
Although there are risk factors that we cannot control, like family history, age or gender; there are many factors that we can control, like diet, exercise and living a balanced and healthy lifestyle. The good news is that the AHA says that 80 percent of heart disease and stroke can be prevented.
What are you willing to do to lower your risk of developing heart disease? Controlling and preventing additional risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease.
To lower your risk for heart disease:
